| Welcome! Welcome to the Affiliated Pathologists Medical Group (APMG) Mentoring Program. This is the most profound organizational change to be implemented in the history of the Affiliated Pathologists Medical Group (APMG). For many years, new pathologists joining APMG were expected to learn the intricacies of our group practice by osmosis, usually shadowing an older pathologist assuming that key skills would be learned. Most of the time, however, new pathologists would stumble through a complicated problem hoping that an acceptable outcome would result. Missing from all of these experiences was a formal process for sharing and learning valuable lessons learned by our more senior pathologists. Residency training may prepare a pathologist for some of the diagnostic challenges they are certain to face, but no specific training can be found to teach the nuances of negotiating a business contract or deftly maneuvering through thorny issues at a medical staff meeting. As a result, at the end of four years, a bewildered pathologist is presented before the APMG shareholders and asked to give an account of their activities in order to justify to the group why they deserve to be elevated to shareholder status. It is no surprise that there sometimes is confusion on both sides over misguided or misinformed expectations. Mentoring is a dynamic exchange between two individuals, a mentor and a protégé. You join an ancient and honored tradition transcending time and culture. In spite of documented success in many areas of industry, there is little if any literature outlining a similar program for pathologists. This is somewhat surprising given the type of training to which most pathologists are exposed, intimate sessions spent at a double-headed microscope usually with a few senior pathologists. The APMG mentoring program is designed to specifically address these concerns. APMG believes that all pathologists, whom we hire on the shareholder tract, have the ability and potential to become a shareholder. Indeed, we reaffirm our commitment to developing each pathologist's potential to not only become a shareholder but to reach their maximal potential, to become a pathologist par excellence (PPEP) . To this end, our mentoring program is more than just a vehicle to satisfy shareholder's demands and expectations. It is a program to help each new pathologist gain a fresh insight of their abilities and develop skills that may have lain dormant or unrealized. With time, independence and self-reliance gained through this program can in turn be passed on to successive generations of pathologists, as the protégé now becomes the mentor. Pillars of PPEP Our logo represents the pillars of PPEP. All activities of the program will be based upon one or more of these areas. Creativity Mission Statement Leadership
Organizational Structure of Mentoring Committee Members The Mentoring committee reports directly to the APMG Executive Board. PPEP policies and procedures will be developed and implemented by the mentoring committee. Last Updated April 28, 2008
